Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped lymph nodes located at the back of the throat. It is a common condition that mostly affects children but can also occur in adults. The infection may be caused by viruses or bacteria.
Causes of Tonsillitis
- Viral infections such as the common cold or flu
- Bacterial infections, most commonly streptococcus (strep throat)
- Exposure to irritants like smoke or pollution
Symptoms of Tonsillitis
- Sore throat and difficulty swallowing
- Swollen and red tonsils, sometimes with white patches
- Fever and chills
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Bad breath and fatigue
Treatment Options
Viral tonsillitis usually resolves on its own with rest, fluids, and pain relief medications. Bacterial tonsillitis requires antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. In cases of recurrent or severe tonsillitis, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be considered.
When to See a Doctor
If you experience severe sore throat lasting more than a few days, difficulty breathing, or frequent episodes of tonsillitis, it is important to consult an ENT specialist for proper evaluation and treatment.
