Sinusitis (Sinus Infection)
Sinusitis is a common condition that occurs when the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces around the nose, become inflamed and blocked. This inflammation is usually caused by infections, allergies, or structural issues in the nose.
Causes of Sinusitis
- Bacterial or viral infections following a cold or flu
- Allergic reactions causing nasal swelling
- Nasal polyps or structural problems like a deviated septum
- Exposure to pollutants or irritants
Symptoms of Sinusitis
- Nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose
- Facial pain or pressure, especially around the eyes and forehead
- Thick nasal discharge (yellow or green)
- Headache, fatigue, and sometimes fever
Treatment Options
Mild sinus infections often improve on their own. However, treatment may include decongestant sprays, antihistamines, saline rinses, or antibiotics if a bacterial infection is confirmed. In chronic or severe cases, surgery may be required to improve sinus drainage.
When to See a Doctor
If symptoms persist for more than 10 days, or if you experience high fever, vision problems, or severe facial pain, it is important to consult an ENT specialist.
